Everyone has a family story of migration. Through a unit on human migration, students will study informational texts, narratives, documentaries, and an interactive game to prepare them for creating their own migration narratives or documentaries. When students tell their family stories accurately, with language and techniques that engage others, they gain confidence in their language skill levels and increase their sense of connectedness to the world. The novel, "The Border," in addition to being a compelling book for even the most reluctant readers, is also a great model of what a migration story might look like. So the novel can fulfill several goals pertaining to reading stamina, language skills, modeling of writing style, and broadening world perspective.
