My students attend a public school in Illinois. The majority of the students in the school, over 72.6%, are Hispanic. African American Students make up 13.9% and the remaining students are of Asian and Caucasian decent. 90.4 % of the student body is considered low income. 8.3% receive special education services and 19.1% receive bilingual services. Currently, my seventh grade classroom has 31 students at different reading levels. According to a summative test given, twenty-three of the students are reading below the seventh grade level while 8 are reading at or above the seventh grade level. These students are avid readers and are always asking for recommendations. Of the twenty-three students reading below grade level, 9 are reading at or below the 4th grade level. Most of these students are English Language Learners. I know some of them want to read but the books are too hard for them. The students need books at their reading level and their interest level.
