These materials will be necessary for our students to understand genetics at a deeper conceptual learning. Inheritance and variation of traits is a difficult concepts for students to understand just by reading or watching a video. Having manipulative tools to represent the genes that we get from our parents and exploring the probability that we will also show that trait will help students understand the concept much deeper. By planting their own seeds, students will be able to hypothesize the outcome of the offspring based off their background knowledge of sexual and asexual reproduction. They will start to explore genetics just as Mendel did with his pea plants! These tools and materials will allow students to explore these complex topics by creating a student centered learning environment! If these topics are mastered and retained in meaningful ways, students will be set up for success in high school biology and courses beyond! We need Probabilty and Genetics lab, petri dishes and more.
