I started reading to my 7th graders 12 years ago. I used to request that they read on their own time and quickly realized that it was not happening. Many times it was because students did not know how to go about choosing a good book. I thought I would do something that I enjoyed when I was a kid, listening to someone read to me. Most of my students come from low-income households where parents don’t have the time to read to their kids nor the wherewithal on how to go about it. It is up to us teachers to cultivate a love for books in our classrooms. I am now a math coach at Hawthorne Middle School. It's been many years since our school library updated the books. I've taken it upon myself to reorganize the library so the teachers and students will be motivated to visit and borrow books. We need to update our selection to entice all kids to read.
