Time and again, research has shown that young students need movement to engage their brain and sharpen mental focus. With the decline of recess and reduction of physical education classes, our students have lost a valuable outlet for their fundamental need to move while they learn. The challenge for teachers is how to balance their students need for movement while still delivering core curriculum and ensuring high levels of achievement and learning. This project seeks to provide movement opportunities in the first grade classroom while not losing out on valuable instructional time. The use of flexible seating along with brain breaks and engaging learning activities meets the many needs of active first graders in the general education classroom. My students need wobble stools and stability ball chairs to maintain active focus during instruction.
