My classes will be starting a unit on Oppression. We will be exploring what the term means and how it has been viewed and displayed through our past and present in literature. We are examining various literary tools but the novel will be our biggest asset to the lesson. My students need a class set of the novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This novel is designed to place the students in the shoes of a child, who is struggling to grasp the concept of oppression when it comes to the innocence of friendship and love. My students are able to create connections when they are able to place themselves in the shoes of real humans who lived during these times. It also provides students with the opportunity to use their own voices to share their own stories. I love watching my students embrace their peers with humility, friendship, and compassion because that's what this world needs.
