These items will be put to use in our daily Language Arts instruction, as well as for student use during workstations. 80% of my students are English Language Learners, so having these materials available to them will help them build and create the words we are studying. There is a direct correlation between a student's reading and writing abilities. When students improve their reading skills, they improve their writing skills, and vice versa. This grant will provide these aspiring readers with fun and engaging ways to master sight words, practice phonics skills, and use that knowledge and confidence to write sentences and stories. We have big books included with our curriculum, which we use to practice decoding, fluency, rhyming words, and writing conventions. The students come up and use highlighter tape to find examples of the skills that we are practicing in the big book, but it can be difficult holding it, teaching, and going back and forth to the white board or projector screen. A big book stand is a more convenient way to teach and learn from the big books. The magnetic letters will also be used to spell our sight words and spelling words, with the color coding reinforcing the difference between vowel and consonant sounds. Many of my students are tactile learners, so using the magnetic letters to physically build the words will help them learn the words that we are studying. Many times, my students are reluctant to write because they don't know what to spell something and are afraid of making mistakes; having the letters will help build their confidence as readers and writers!
