My class will closely read and discuss this novel with a particular focus on character choices in the context of looming disaster. In this case, the disasters are the epic and large-scale Hurricane Katrina and the equally epic (in the mind of a teenager) unintended pregnancy and a dying pet. As with all novels, we will engage with this text so as to increase overall literacy and the perseverance necessary to tackle a long and complex novel. We will also use this to deepen the students' understanding of themselves - how they might respond to a crisis - and to develop their empathy about how people respond to situations that are often beyond their control. I have chosen Salvage because it offers a rare female perspective in the "man against nature" theme while simultaneously providing nuanced and interesting male characters. This is a novel that all students have the capacity to be deeply moved by and that should shift all of their thinking to some degree about how we handle our time here on earth. No matter what book I choose to read I would need a new class set - but this is the novel I've decided is the best fit and complement to the students this year that marries complex American literature with themes and characters highly relevant to my students' lives.
