Teaching math with a whiteboard and workbook does not work for first graders. They need to be able to see and experience first hand what we are learning and have a chance to model for me what they have learned. Math manipulatives will provide my students with essential hands-on learning. It will allow them to work in small groups and have a deeper discussion within that group instead of a few students shouting out the answers to the class. This will allow them to grow and develop a deeper understanding of math which they will continue to build on as they get older. In the early elementary years we are providing a foundation for future learning, if they miss out now they may always struggle.
