On December 23rd, the Rollins School in Lawrence, MA suffered an electrical fire causing roughly $2 million dollars in damages. Kindergarten Room 5 has been my second home for these first two years of my teaching career and the 21 students in my classroom make my life. They are bright, enthusiastic, creative and clever people who deserve every opportunity to learn and reach their truest potential. Lawrence is one of the most impoverished cities in the country, where 65% of students are economically disadvantaged and 84% are high needs students. I’m absolutely heartbroken to be one of several rooms to be deemed a total loss and I’ve lost everything to help these fabulous kids achieve anything. Having invested over $1,000 of my own money, resources and equipment and being a 23 new “real life” adult, I can’t afford to provide for my students in the way that they deserve and I am devastated. Room 5 will be Room 205 in a new school, we are starting over from scratch and absolutely any donations would be incredibly appreciated. In order to have a functional classroom to support the learning needs of all students, I need a ton of materials- from basics like markers, crayons and pencils to speakers, headphones and laminators, etc. These children have the right to a basic, foundational education and without the materials that they need, they do not have the opportunity to reach their truest potential.
