While our classroom includes a library that contains numerous books directed at the many reading levels our students possess, it lacks selections that our students can directly relate to. We believe our students would have a greater possibility to build their reading stamina if they had materials that they could identify with and were inspired by. To enhance student growth, we hope to purchase a selection of books that mirrors our students background, culture and lifestyle. We believe that a more personally targeted book selection will benefit both their academic and social growth. Books with characters and topics each student can identify with will help maintain their interest as well as increase their exposure to historical figures, role models and characters they can connect to. We need books such as I, Too, Am America, Jabari Jumps, and Rapunzel to inspire students to read and learn.
