I am working with a special education teacher to improve the educational participation of students with disabilities. The students I work with need to be able to address the way they process sensory input, such as the sights and sounds of a classroom, in order to be able to learn. If they are given the opportunity to complete a variety of structured sensory activities in the occupational therapy sensory room, they will be able to focus more on learning the classroom material. For example, before a student completes a challenging math activity, he/she could use the platform swing to provide sensory input that will help improve his/her attention to the activity. Students who become overwhelmed when asked to stop playing a game and begin classwork can use the body sock to get deep pressure input that will calm them down. A student that has difficulty staying still enough in class to be able to learn can take scheduled breaks in the sensory room; he/she can use the sensory diet cards to completed guided movement activities to decrease excess energy. Learning doesn't need to be a stressful experience for students with disabilities. Donations to this project will enable me to provide the equipment my students need to decrease behaviors that impact their ability to learn and improve participation in school activities.
