I was awarded the unique opportunity to experience, first-hand, the globally top-rated Finnish educational system granted by the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program. The focus of my inquiry project was Inquiry Project: Best practices for low-performing students and the effects of motivation. I developed a website: Best Educational Practices: A View From the Finnish Line that summarizes my findings. Of the many best practices I discovered, coding as a learning skill versus a computer class, was the most fascinating. I hope to implement coding into my classroom curriculum, but I need your help. Investing in this project, you will provide basic access to technology for these eager learners to develop 21st Century Skills, such as CODING by providing tablets. I learned that in Finland that coding is not viewed a separate subject area, but a new learning skill that encompasses computational thinking and programming that can be transferred to all subject areas. In fact, the Finland curriculum coding is mandatory and is the first country to view coding as a new learning skill to be taught across all subjects. I hope to incorporate coding into my classroom, but first things first, a device to access the technology. Currently, my school has one computer lab that services over 900 students. It is difficult to get to use the computer because of the mere size of the school. However, another reason is that the upper-grades are given priority to use the computer lab because of the high-stakes standardized state tests they need to take and we support our teachers in this endeavor in preparing the students. We thank you in advance for your time and consideration in this project and hope you will see what a fundamental gift of learning you will be providing!
