In recent years, librarians and teachers have expressed to publishers a need for more diversity in books and publishers are answering. However, the average copyright date of our library collection is 1998--a time well before the current push for diverse books. This year, I would like to have students help me conduct a diversity audit on our collection and use the data gathered to purchase fiction and non-fiction books that better reflect our population and showcase diversity. We need to update our collection to include books that act as windows to see the world from other perspectives and mirrors in which students see themselves reflected.
