In a Common Core world, kindergarteners are expected to know various concepts and how those concepts relate to the stories they read. In a community where English is most of the student's second language, colorful pictures are essential to ensure they are able to comprehend the English words, phrases and concepts that are being taught. When a kindergarten classroom is required to look more like a first grade classroom, essential skills such as googling images and creating vocabulary books are critical to their success. We are requesting a duplex (two-sided) color printer, color and black ink, and a case of paper. Vocabulary words without colorful pictures, within a five year olds notebook are just letters that someone put together. The colorful illustrations that would accompany the words (if we had a color printer) would bring its meaning to life. Making vocabulary, reading and writing a fun activity to our young emergent learners will ensure they develop a love for literacy.
