By having some furniture that is mobile, our students can "move it" out of the way when necessary. We build various engineering designs as part of our STEM work including towers. We need tables that can raise and lower. As we build tall structures, it is helpful for the table to be lower so students are not climbing in an unsafe manner to work on their project. Limited space limits student creativity. So we are trying to be creative in overcoming these limits. We designed a large floor Venn Diagram to compare two communities in the story Abuela where we saw how New York City was different and like our own community. But we had to carefully roll up our diagram each day. It took away from the visual being there when we needed to reference it. Sometimes we need things cleared away. Our Readers Theater needs different accommodations. The mobile stools will be perfect for quickly rearranging our seating area. These and folding, lightweight benches can be used for our guests who watch our performances and to have around our carpeted gathering space so everyone has a view during class presentations or lessons. Easy to move tables, benches, and stools will allow us to focus on our tasks and not get restricted by our space. Although there are only 19 students in this homeroom class, three second grade classrooms will rotate through this room with our new Gemini Project next year.
