A big part of adult life is being able to provide for yourself and others, which includes cooking healthy meals. In my classroom we learn how to follow recipes, be safe in the kitchen, and use appliances like a stove and oven to cook meals. My classroom is a new addition to our high school and does not have all the small appliances that students would use to cook with. We need a microwave, toaster oven, blender, can opener, griddle, kettle, electric skillet, and slow cooker. Small appliances are used in most households. My students come from poor family backgrounds and have many of these appliances in their households, but do not know how to use them, as their parents are concerned that they will not know what to do with them. My job as a teacher is get my students prepared for life after high school. Small appliances like a microwave, toaster oven, blender, can opener, griddle, kettle, electric skillet, and slow cooker will help my students learn how to independent adult learners.
