In my class, one day per week is devoted to students reading independently. This is designed to support the growth of student literacy through building vocabulary and comprehension. In order to facilitate an effective class reading project, I need a classroom library with books that not only challenge students academically, but also engage them in wanting to read. I have included titles that I believe will excite my students and make them want to keep working toward their goals of becoming effective readers. In addition, I included a document camera. I believe this will allow for more direct and engaging instruction for several reasons. Students will be able to follow along with me as I write and see the process of breaking down and editing text. We can work together by sharing class writing assignments and peer reviewing. It even has the added bonus of me not having to have my back to them when using a whiteboard.
