My goal for this project is to build a choice book unit where students get to choose what they want to read. The focus of the unit are books with female authors and/or female protagonists. Many of the classics used by English classes were written by men and many of them have male leads. Yes, I'm doing this because I teach young girls, but mainly because I teach young boys and they need to learn what it's like to navigate the world as a woman. It is important to reach students on a personal and cultural level, and I believe these selections will provide a variety of experiences that all of my kids will benefit from. In addition to our other course work, the students will independently read these new books and will then conference with me periodically. They will also work in small groups to share what they have learned in their selections with their classmates, who will then choose another book in a second or third round of selections.
