I am the school counselor in a middle school in a public school district that serves the poorest children in Michigan. In other words, I have 380 students on my caseload in a middle school that serves a low-income, very small city surrounded by Detroit, where students' needs extend beyond learning to read. In addition to feeding hungry bellies breakfast, lunch and snack, we feed them love, acceptance, social skills and a hands-on, student-led education! I have the best students! My school and class are very diverse, containing mostly Bengali, Caucasian, African-American, Polish, Bosnian and Yemeni children, many of whom do not speak English at home. They are hard workers, creative, loving and enthusiastic!
