At our elementary school, we recognize the need for students to engage in social opportunities to build their interpersonal and problem solving skills. Lunch time is a great opportunity for students to socialize and interact with their peers in an unstructured environment. After eating their lunch, students clean up after themselves and then are encouraged to socialize with their peers while playing games, reading, creating art, helping with community service projects and other self-guided educational exploration. The games and items in this project will be used to supply our students with choices in the free play area. Our students have requested items such as legos, chess, checkers, and scrabble to play during their free time. This independent, unstructured play time has increased our student's interpersonal skills and allows them to interact with their peers in a safe and stress free environment.
