I am a fourth grade special education teacher in an ICT setting in NYC. The dominate ethnicity of the children in my school is African American and Hispanic and a large percentage of those children are immigrants and second language speakers. Over 90% of the children at my school receive free or reduced lunch. Our school is located in a urban community. My class is comprised of 30 boys and girls. Half has been classified with at least one disability that range from Speech and Language Impaired to OHI. Three students need the assistants of a one on one para professional. My children are typical 9 and 10 year olds. They love to play, hug, talk, and laugh. They get stubborn, throw tantrums, shout, yell and cry. Their abilities range from reading on a 2nd grade level all they up to fifth grade. They are an amazing, unique, free-spirited bunch of individuals who could really soar with the right tools.
