Providing flexible seating options will allow my first graders to take ownership in their school day. They will gain additional ways to become more responsible. Most importantly, my active students will not be expected to sit in one chair all day. By implementing a flexible seating learning environment, the first graders will have a choice. When children get to have a say in the physical aspects of the learning environment, it promotes self-awareness, reflection, better engagement, and the physical movement that is a necessity to all learners. Options such as wobbly stools, bean bags, yoga balls, and mats will enhance the classroom learning. Students will learn how to find the best seating choice that will allow them to be calm, focused and productive. Flexible seating allows for quick transitions, and provides a conducive classroom for collaboration and open communication. Students can easily pair up, work in small or whole groups and independently. Physical movement is limited throughout our school day, and when learners become stationed at one seat for a long period of time, it can have a negative impact on their learning. I know my first graders will greatly benefit from flexible seating options. They are full of energy and can soak up all the learning! With your support, they will have a choice in seating and find what is the best fit for them to reach their full potential!
