I am a firm believer that teaching students to be good humans is just as important as teaching them academics. I've noticed that my students connect best with books that have characters their age and are involved in situations in which they could relate to. Unfortunately, my students do not always have access to books that fit this description. Wonder is a book that not only tells the story of a 5th grader, but it also lends to important discussions about kindness, compassion, acceptance, and empathy. These are all traits that I believe are important to instill in my 5th graders to make them the best human beings they can be.
