A Long Walk to Water will guide students through the analysis and evaluation of African people, struggles, and history. My students don't currently have options for current and timely, young adult literature. Student understanding is deepened when content areas are connected, and learning has value. My students need literature that reinforces concepts in World History and Human Geography. A Long Walk to Water begins as two stories, told in alternating sections, about a girl in Sudan in 2008 and a boy in Sudan in 1985. The Water for Sudan program is a platform in the book that gives students an opportunity to explore their own philanthropic feelings and apply that in community service activities.
