My ELAR and Reading Studies intervention students are mostly composed of students of color who do not have many modern, minority focused, YA reading options at their immediate disposal. Part of the reason is that their school library has limited hours as it doubles as a conference and presentation room. Aside from limited financial resources at home, the other reason is that such literature is not immediately available in my classroom. When students can see themselves in a book character, their interest is sparked and the likelihood that they will enjoy reading will increase. The few novels I have been able to get my hands on for them, have been borrowed the minute they are returned or worn out from heavy usage. Aside from graphic novels, that sort of excitement generated from novels is an uncommon occurrence. With a more stocked classroom library, I can create safe, welcome and joyous space for my students to read.
