My goal is to make the Spanish language exciting for my students and to capture their interest through a variety of interactive strategies that integrate movement, music, and storytelling into their language development. I strive to provide a language-rich environment abundant in compelling contextualized comprehensible input for the purpose of facilitating their Spanish language acquisition. Additionally, my students need to capitalize on their English reading skills to foster biliteracy. A highly effective way to do that is to give students the opportunity to read age appropriate, high interest novels that contain a manageable amount of vocabulary and numerous cognates (words that are similar in two languages). By providing a wide range of compelling leveled readers specifically designed to facilitate language acquisition, my students will be exposed to core vocabulary woven into riveting stories. It is so rewarding to see the excitement on my middle school students’ faces as they gain confidence in communicating and becoming literate in a second language. Even outside of the classroom, I have seen my students eager to show off their new Spanish skills with a fun book rather than reaching for their phones. I am hoping to purchase some novels that will engage and inspire my students with captivating plots that appeal to middle school students. I am requesting a classroom set of ¨Muerte en Buenos Aires¨ by Paco Ardit to deepen my students comprehension of Spanish and increase their emotional engagement.
