I knew that I needed to make a change a few weeks ago. My students were sitting at the carpet as I read a story, when one of our IT support members slipped in to put updates on my computer. We have an amazing IT staff and often work "behind the scenes." A little girl in my class raised her hand and said "there is a lady on your computer." I made sure to explain who this nice lady was and her job at our school. After completing this introduction, another child says "Wait, I thought only boys could fix computers." Wow! What an eye opener. I learned a valuable lesson this day, I need to not only expose my young students to careers in technology, but empower them to try new things, no matter their gender. We have currently begun a new initiative to expose the kindergarten students to coding, but it is not enough to just talk about coding. We need students to get their hands on technology that will allow them to explore and learn first hand. The Wonder Workshop Dash Robot, Magnetic Gears, and 5 Bit Bots that I have requested for my class are programmable robots that are geared towards young learners. I have so many ideas of how to use these in the classroom throughout the school year. One idea that I have is incorporating the robots into handwriting time. The children will use markers to create the letter we are practicing and set up the robot to follow the lines of the letter. If the lines do not connect well, the robot will crash. I can't wait to see the problem solving, team work, and new way of thinking that these materials will bring to my students.
