My students need an opportunity to experience really interacting with their own copy of a novel. This inspirational memoir The Freedom Writers Diary touches on all of the issues, challenges, and divisions that my diverse students are experiencing right now. Giving them their own copy will allow them to highlight, write in the margins, and make this their very own. This touching real-life story, the lessons it offers about acceptance, and the opportunity to really interact with a book is EXACTLY what my students need! So much of their educational experience revolves around "don't write in this" textbooks, library books, or class sets of novels. They need to have something THEY make their own and can stay with them. THIS book is the perfect fit for that goal! I strive daily to show my students that they matter, that they are loved, that they are important. Often, though, it falls on doubtful ears because of their own experiences. I want to use this memoir as a way to foster a deeper relationship with them, and allow them to make authentic connections with each other. This is something desperately lacking in our world in so many ways! Please help me make this a reality for my students!
