My classroom has a culturally, economically, and racially diverse student body, as well as a large number of students who are first generation Americans and will be the first generation to attend college. The student body is approximately 57% female and 43% male, 30% Caucasian, 27% Hispanic, 25% African-American, 10% Asian and 8% Other. Approximately 51% are eligible for free or reduced lunch. My school is part of the ASD NEST Program that was created for higher functioning students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Approximately 5% of my students participate in the NEST in an integrated co-taught classroom setting. We are one of two schools in New York City piloting this program at the high school level.
