Life is all about the experiences you have. Literature is just that: experiences. We read about experiences, talk about them and apply them. What I want to do with my students is to give them experience. Our "Empowerment" unit will emphasize students' voices in our society today. We will be reading "Night" and "Farewell to Manzanar" and looking at how these people have chosen to give their experiences life, even in the worst of circumstances. As a culminating act, I want to take them to the Anne Frank Memorial in Boise, ID to hear a presentation on another person whose voice lives on. The memorial teaches students about the spiral of injustice and teaches them ways that they can speak up and speak out against the different injustices in the world. The quote wall hugs the statue of Anne Frank with words of inspiration from voices of the past, inspiring students to step up and do a little better. After this experience students will write a letter to a person in power about a topic they are passionate about, then send the letter to them. Even if they don't receive a letter in return, they have taken one more step toward empowerment.
