It's rare to come across a middle grade book with writing powerful enough to make both adults and young readers see the world differently. Wonder, by R.J. Palacio is such a book. One area my students struggle with is understanding the social and emotional aspects of being an adolescent. Because of your generous donation to our project, you will not only help to improve their social-emotional development, but you will also increase their academic achievement. On a daily basis students in my classroom engage in reading, writing, speaking and listening. 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne's Book of Precepts would be ideal for a warm-up task. Students would respond daily to a quote from a historical figure. Responding to the quotes (precepts) would provide students with an opportunity to reflect and guide them when making important decisions. Students would then brainstorm precepts that could be applicable to all students in our school to make it a safer, kinder place to be. The Choose Kind journal is filled with quotes and writing prompts. Wonder tells the story from six different perspectives. Auggie & Me: three Wonder stories, shares three additional perspectives. Students would compare and contrast the perspectives and write a poem in two voices: one voice expressing on character's perspective and the other voice expressing another character's perspective. The In A World Where You Can Be Anything Choose Kind T Shirts would be a great way to show that we are unified in our Choose Kind Campaign.
