Cheerleading is a way out for a lot of my athletes. Several of them use it as an outlet to stay out of trouble both in and out of school. It gives the majority of my students something to work towards and a reason to even show up to school some days. We are the family for some that they don't have. We come from a very small town which was part of the second hardest hit county in the state of Florida by Hurricane Irma. Being a part of a cheer team is already financially tough for some of my athletes, and even more so after the devastating hurricane that came through our town. I not only coach but I also teach, so I am around these students a lot. It is a wonderful group of kids who give everything they have and are hitting stunts at levels that they have been told they could not hit. The mats we have are starting to rip and tear and are becoming more of a stunting hazard than a safety precaution. Our town was hit hard, and things are still not back to normal, businesses who normally give are still trying to pick up the pieces, therefore fundraising for new mats is not on option. This would make a huge difference in the lives of these athletes, and the ones to come.
