My classroom serves students in a rural community, many of whom will be first-generation college graduates. Other students have solid goals for success, working toward a variety of future jobs. Our county's unemployment and poverty rates are higher than many other counties across the state, but that does not stop my students from setting high goals for academic achievement. My students are eager learners and are open to new ideas and materials that will make learning engaging and meaningful to them. While many students come from lower-income homes, securing their own learning materials, even books, can be a challenge. I have watched former graduates move on to become teachers, doctors, writers, and even start their own businesses to return to our community. They deserve every advantage to help them excel in their goals.
