I teach Family and Consumer Sciences at an urban high school. In the field of FACS, founded as home economics, is the comprehensive body of skills, research, and knowledge that helps people make informed decisions about their well being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life. In my classes we try to keep things hands-on and allow them as many opportunities as possible to learn skills they will use for a lifetime. In Culinary Arts classes students work in groups to cook and utilize the skills they are learning about. In Sewing students are learning the basics of how to hand sew and how to use a sewing machine where each student creates a pair of pants and a shirt. In our other classes they learn about how they can be responsible parents and adults. In our classes students have the opportunity to create something tangible and take pride in the work they do and products they create.
