My school’s PBIS team has developed a school-wide token economy. When students are observed showing scholarly behavior or extraordinary kindness, they are rewarded with a “scholar dollar.” Students are challenged to earn twenty-five scholar dollars, which are exchanged for one “big buck.” The school counselor (a member of the PBIS team) opens a student store once a month. Students bring all of their earned big bucks to the store to purchase items. Some of the store inventory includes school supplies, head phones, art kits, puddy, various figurines, chap stick, and so on. The majority of items come from a dollar store. I have noticed that students greatly appreciate the store and its offerings, and many are starting to save big bucks for larger purchases. The PBIS team would love to provide bicycles, tricycles, scooters, and skateboards to students that can earn them. Having these larger items in the store will greatly incentivize students by providing access to things that they otherwise may not have access to. Additionally, having the proposed items in the student store will present all students the opportunity to learn about the skill of saving and delayed gratification. Please consider helping my students ride towards success!
