The impact of the novel coronavirus on education cannot be overstated. As teachers, we had to re-examine our instructional strategies and reconsider the materials that are essential for effective instruction. In the fall, my students will take turns learning from home and coming into the classroom each week. Luckily, our district will provide technology to students who do not have the necessary devices at home. However, there are some essential supplies that will help students build responsibility and take charge of their assignments both in school and at home. The products I have selected will help my students navigate from the classroom setting to their home learning environments as seamlessly as possible. Individual dry-erase markers and paddles will allow students to show their work and enable me to assess their understanding whether they hold up their paddles in the classroom or in front of a tablet at home. Individual notebooks, folders, plastic sleeves will be extremely beneficial for students to have essential supplies even if families do not have the discretionary income to purchase school supplies on their own. I can create a safer, socially-distanced classroom environment with stools and individual privacy boards to set up learning stations for students inside the classroom. As teachers we must always find ways to stimulate and motivate students, and especially to spark a true love of learning. For that reason, I am asking for help to purchase a bookcase that will allow me to display some favorite books from our classroom library in a way that will hopefully pique my students’ interest. Additionally, I have found that hands-on tools such as alphabet stamps are tremendously popular and help build the foundational skills that students need to be proficient readers.
