My students are struggling readers. As young people, on the other hand, they are bright, creative, and jam-packed with energy. For all of their bravado, they are uncomfortable and often scared when it comes to reading. If the passage looks "too long," often their first impulse is to just give up. My students are eighth graders at a high-need middle school in Washington DC, woefully lacking in resources and subject to ongoing budget cuts. My students are without substantial experience or interaction with novels.
