I'm requesting a sofa, carpet, bean bag chair, cushions. These materials can be used as a preferential seating option or for a station activity to allow for independent work to increase focus, a flexible seating option useful to reduce distractions. A few students have difficulty remaining on a task for more than five minutes, however, have responded well to preferred seating options away from others. The furnished area will be used to create a small nook in the classroom where students who require breaks from the whole group would be permitted to go. Currently, the classroom is in need of an inviting, clearly designated place where students who are being coached in self-control and calming down strategies can retreat to do so. Such an area can be used to de-escalate agitated or anxious students who have exhibited explosive behaviors and support the instruction of self-regulation.
