The most effective way to develop a love of reading in children is to read to them. Studies have found that reading aloud to children every day puts them almost an academic year ahead of children who do not receive daily read alouds. This practice inspires a lifelong success for reading. For ELL students, reading aloud can help them to develop important language and vocabulary skills they need to communicate with their peers in English. These books will give me the opportunity to read authentic literature that are rich in language and vocabulary, an area in which my students are deprived. The books I have chosen for my classroom will be used during the time in our literacy block that I get to read to my students for enjoyment. Together we will gather at the meeting area, and kick back to enjoy a great read. Many of these titles have been chosen with my ELLs in mind because they can connect to them culturally, have themes they can relate too, and will teach them lifelong lessons. These books will be displayed in our classroom library, so that we may read them again and again. With these authentic texts, my goal is to encourage my students to thrive and become lifelong readers, thinkers, and learners. They will also help to encourage connections, tap into areas of interest, and foster a love for reading for all of my ELL students.
