The recorders purchased with the funds for this project will provide each of my 80 third grade students with their very own recorder to play in music class throughout third, fourth, and fifth grade. When students leave my school in the fifth grade, they take their recorders with them, along with a notebook of all of the recorder music they have learned. Students will be able to learn the pitches B,A,G, and E in the third grade. We will use the Recorder Karate method, along with several recorder pieces from Quaver music as well as other supplemental songs. Students will earn a "belt" on the bottom of their recorders every time they play a song individually for me. In the fourth grade, they will review B,A,G, and E and will learn low D, as well as high C and high D. In fifth grade, students will continue to fine tune their recorder skills, and will add F sharp. Fifth grade students also participate in a field trip to a symphony orchestra concert where they are actually allowed to play their recorders on certain pieces along with the orchestra! My third grade students are so excited to start playing the recorder! They have older siblings, cousins, and friends who have previously played the recorder and have heard how much fun it is! They are motivated to learn, but we need the resources to purchase the recorders to actually put the instrument in each student's hands!
