We are working to create an environment where all students feel safe and supported in regards to their emotions. One way that we can create that environment is to provide students with a variety of valuable tools. These can be used to support self-awareness and self-regulation so behaviors match the demands of the context. Students will be able to learn, use and access a variety of tools and supports to help them maintain an optimal state-of-mind in order to access instruction. Through this project, students will see how self-regulation can impact how those around them may think and feel as well as support them in accomplishing whatever we are trying to do, such as play, socialize or learn. Some of the various tools that students will have available will include a weighted lap blanket, a weighted pet, fidget balls, "Think-N-Roll" foot roller and Cocoon-Swing and Sand. The Weighted Lap pad and Weighted Pet provide an overall calming effect. The weight offers proprioceptive feedback and is designed for students who are having difficulty sitting still or focusing. The fidget balls are great fidgets, stress-reducers and support students developing necessary hand-strength. The foot-roller attaches easily to classroom chairs and helps students regulate their busy feet in order to stay focused. The Cocoon swing provides deep pressure input and helps children who have difficulty maintaining their equilibrium. Finally, the Resistance band offers full body pressure during movement and exercise, enhanced motor control, coordination by activating body center awareness and strengthening of core musculature. The bands bring a sensorimotor challenge to resistance and provide an overall calming effect.
