Students will start this novel study by completing a research project about the plight of Native American tribes. This will increase their background knowledge of the issues presented in the text, as well as equip them with research strategies that they will continue to use throughout their education. Students will read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian while participating in literature circles, which will provide students with communication skills and sharpen their understanding of complex texts. Students will end the novel study unit by writing an informative essay in which they discuss the character development of the main character. This novel will make a difference in their lives by teaching them growth mindset and necessary written and verbal communication skills. To really spark my students' interests and motivate them to learn, I need to show them that reading can be interesting and educational.
