Many of my students struggle with timely basic fact fluency. Their lack of speed bogs down their learning by creating a sense of inadequacy and discouragement. Even those students who are arithmetically fluent often don't want to be slowed down by having to manually calculate a value before moving on to the next step of a problem. Having a TI-108 calculator ready and available at all times in the classroom will eliminate the sluggish manual calculations and let students move on to the more important parts of math: critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and problem-solving. In our state, seventh graders are allowed to use a TI-108 calculator, built into the computerized testing platform, on the high-stakes math test. Providing physical TI-108s and instruction in appropriate usage of that calculator will build up my students' speed, proficiency, and confidence in their abilities so that they, too, can "transform the world."
