When students this age choose books, they often use the story as a tool for navigating their own lives. This project will provide students the opportunity to find books with characters that resemble a variety of students. It is important that the students can open a book and see versions of their skin color or hairstyle. They need to see characters with cultural differences and assistive devices just like they will encounter in the real world. The more the kids see the characters showing kindness, acceptance, and compassion, the better their own interactions will be.
