Hearing the word "fractions" often brings a feeling of fear and discouragement in the hearts and minds of fourth graders. Fourth grade is a big year for fractions, so my goal each year is to take the fear out of fractions! We do our best to start with concrete manipulatives when discovering fractions so that the students really understand the concept of what a fraction is and how to think about them. However, we don't have enough manipulatives for every student to have a set during a lesson, so students are often not truly grasping the concept as they need. These fraction bars and tiles will ensure that each of my students will be able to use these manipulatives in both their small group and independent work. We are able to use the ones we already have during small group lessons, but when they leave the teacher table, they no longer have access to them for their independent work. Using the manipulatives really helps students see how decimals and fractions relate to one another. I have included 5 sets of blank fraction tiles to be used by students who receive accommodations and can have the manipulative on tests. On our state test (STAAR), only blank models are allowable. Thanks for your donation to help fractions become friends for my students!
