While I have had some good luck getting my reluctant readers interested in books and independent reading, I have found that my students are more apt to pick up a novel if they know peers in their class are enjoying it! This past school year I had kiddos scrambling to get their hands on specific titles because of peer recommendations (this is every ELA teacher's dream, I'm pretty sure). I had students chomping at the bit for their friends to finish a book so that they could begin to read it. That's what lead me to this idea: If I have multiple copies of popular titles, I can put together some peer reading groups and hopefully create even more excitement about reading! I have worked closely with a children's librarian from the Boston Public Library to curate an extensive list of titles that are sure to enrich the lives of my students. The novels we've chosen cover topics like adventure, mystery, sports, divorce, empathy, homelessness, bullying, physical handicaps, being the new kid, being different. In short, the aim was to choose books that every student could relate to. But, what's more, it is my hope that the addition of these books in my classroom will teach my students that reading does not have to be viewed as a chore, but rather a pleasure, an escape, an eye-opening experience! Reading can be FUN!
