Having a kitchen center will allow my students to use imaginative play to develop their language skills, communication skills, and improve cognitive abilities. I have five students receiving speech services, having to communicate with other students in play will benefit their language development. With higher standards now facing our youngest learners, imaginative play needs to be a vital part of their day. Without imaginative play kindergarteners will not develop the social skills needed for effective communication. Play time is an equalizer, no one is "better" at it than anyone else. There are no scores given, no separate groups, everyone is on the same level, which is what I value and love about play time. Incorporating a kitchen center into my classroom will give all of my students the opportunity for improved cognitive growth, language skills and they will learn to problem solve with their peers.
