I have many dress up clothes and costumes that align with the Pre-K curriculum themes of the county in which I teach. For the community helper theme, I have costumes of common community helpers (nurse, vet, firefighter, police officer) and corresponding hats. For the family theme, I have costumes that some of my students' families may wear or have worn. I also have animal costumes and masks for the animal unit (cow, chicken, rooster). As each theme is being taught, I pull out the costumes for students to try on and wear. When they put on a costume, they have to take on some of the characteristics of the actual person or animal that would wear that. For ease of access (and to clean up when done, as cleaning up is another important skill being taught in prekindergarten!), a costume storage center with pull out baskets is necessary. A difficult but important skill that is introduced in prekindergarten is being able to develop ideas to make something that isn't explicitly taught or modeled. Another theme of the Pre-K curriculum in my district is "Imagine It, Make It." Students participate in read alouds about making things. In centers, children are given a variety of different materials and are asked to make a creation that is all their own. A space saving brick-building table would be ideal to give students an area to make their creations as well as to keep LEGO bricks readily available instead of finding them all over the room!
