My school is a Title 1 school, so we have a good portion of our students on free or reduced lunch. My students come from many different backgrounds. Some have what society would hope for a "normal" family life with two parents home in the evening, cooking dinner, and helping with homework. Others come home to an empty house with their siblings and they are responsible for getting themselves dinner, if possible, and settling everyone in bed before mom or dad even gets home. Then we have a couple who have a parent missing in their lives rather it be from death, prison, or otherwise. Some come to school just to feel safe and loved, others are here because they have a love of learning and some come to school for both.
